Chapter 19 - Eurycleia Recognizes Odysseus

In chapter 19 Odysseus and Telemachus start thinking up a plan to defeat the suitors once and for all and get there justice. They decided they were going to hide the weapons in the hall and when the suitors were good and drunk they would use the weapons to defeat them all. After the weapons are hidden and Odysseus is alone for once Peneolpe comes and sits by the fire. Odysseus gets into an argument with a maid but Penelope backs him up and she goes away. Then She starts to question him about himself and where he came from. She tells him all about the shroud she was weaving for three years to prevent her self from marrying the suitors and she admits to him she dosen't want to marry any of them and just wants Odysseus. Then Odysseus tells her how he supposably got to Ithaca. Then he tells her he has seen Odysseus and to make sure he isn't lieing to her she makes him describe what he was wearing. He tells her about a rich purple cloak and a gold brooch.Before they go to bed she tell him of a dream she had where there was an eagel that swooped down and klled all of her geese. Then the eagle told her that he represented Odysseus and how he would soon come home to her and kill all of the suitors. She knows hes telling the truth becuase of how accuratley he described the clothes she gave to Odysseus before h left for war and gives him a bed for the night and goes to bed herself. She tells the maid Eurycleia to wash his feet beofre bed and she does. She notices a scar that only Odysseus has and she knows its him because she was his nanny as a child. He makes her swear to the gods not to tell any one and she promises she wont.

He went to Dodona to find out (from Zeus using the sacred oak-tree) if he should return to his people openly or in disguise.

She recognized the scar Odysseus had received years before the war from the tusk os a boar.

His grandfather gave him the name to signify his odds with many people.

How did Odysseus get his scar? (Jaime)

When he was visiting Autolycus's sons, they feasted. Odysseus and the sons went hunting but when Odysseus tried to hit/ kill and missed the boar, it jabbed his foot (below his knee) though Odysseus jabbs the boar in the shoulder and kills him. The sons bandaged Odysseus. They sent him home with lots of presents.

What does Penelope dream of? (Jaime)

She dreams (really it's a nightmare) that an eagle swoops down and breaks the necks of twenty of her geese. Penelope mourns the loss of her geese whom she loved to watch. Suddenly the eagle comes back, and perches on a beam on the roof and starts talking (IN HUMAN… gasp) and says that she should not worry that this is a good sign. The suitors are the geese and Odysseus is the eagle and he will kill them and bring justice to his palace.

What test does Penelope propose for choosing a suitor?

She is going to line up the Suitors and make them shoot with a bow and arrow. Whoever has the most skill (gets the arrow through 12 axe handles at once) will be the man she chooses.
